I received an e-lert from S.A.V.E. Services earlier this week that included a link to a PSA video produced by telecommunications giant, Verizon, in conjunction with the National Domestic Violence Hotline. (The video is posted below).
This video is beyond offensive. First, the statistics cited in this very misleading, sexist and bigoted PSA video are inaccurate and have been proven false time and again in hundreds of peer-reviewed studies. Second, Verizon is attempting to sell their products and services, during the holiday season, by shamelessly pandering to a fearful and woefully misinformed public that they are deliberately continuing to misinform (i.e., LIE).
The S.A.V.E. Services e-lert requests that everyone who finds this dishonest, sexist and bigoted P-BS-A (Public BullShit Announcement) offensive to please contact the Verizon Foundation to voice your complaint/disgust/outrage about their campaign to portray all men as the sole perpetrators of domestic violence and “monsters” and all boys as potential abusers and “monsters” and all women and girls as victims.
I will go one step better. I plan on discontinuing my cell phone service with Verizon with a letter telling them why they are losing my business. It’s bad enough that Verizon service is shoddy and over-priced. I will not spend my hard-earned money to fund the dissemination of lies, sexism and bigotry.
S.A.V.E. Services created a flyer PDF titled, Verizon Teaches Girls to Fear their Dads, which you can download here.
S.A.V.E. describes the Verizon Monster video:
Verizon Foundation has put out a video that teaches little girls to fear their fathers as abusive and dangerous “monsters.” The video’s perverse message can be summed in this slide: “She’s afraid of her dad.” (Appears 28 seconds into the video.)
There’s one word that sums up the biases found in this 2-minute video: Shameful.
“This video is particularly disturbing since the use of animation makes it appealing to children. It smears adult men as the only abusers in a household, when the fact is women are as likely to abuse their partners as men,” explains SAVE spokesman Philip W. Cook. “This video is dangerously harmful to children and to families.”

Don’t let Verizon’s Monster video steal the spirit of the Holiday Season. Tell Verizon to immediately remove this hurtful video.
Politely contact Bob Varettoni, Executive Director of Media Relations:

If you find this video offensive and dishonest, please consider contacting Verizon and/or boycotting their products. The bottom line for giant corporations is the Almighty Dollar (and other forms of currency), so I say, hit ’em where it hurts and let them know they can’t vilify half the world’s population with lies and continue to enjoy our patronage.
